SUNLIGHT, SIX STRINGS & A MOMENT

There are concerts built around volume, spectacle and chaos — and then there are artists who can command a massive space with little more than a song and the way they deliver it.

I photographed VANCE JOY at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas on April 25, 2015 during Edgefest 25. In the middle of a massive festival lineup, his performance offered a completely different rhythm through my camera: natural light, subtle expressions, acoustic textures and those small moments that can disappear if you aren't watching for them.

Photographing VANCE JOY was less about chasing chaos and more about waiting for the frame — the glance, the lyric, the movement of a hand across the guitar. Sometimes the quietest performances leave behind some of the strongest photographs.

Some performances ask you to react. Others make you wait.

Photographing VANCE JOY at Toyota Stadium was about finding the moments between the obvious ones — the expression immediately before a lyric, the movement of his hands across the guitar, the concentration at the microphone and those brief instances when an artist seems separated from the thousands of people surrounding him.

In black and white, the festival stage falls away even further. Color stops competing for attention and the photographs become about shape, light, expression and connection.

That is what I remember most about this set: finding intimacy in a place built for thousands.
